Date - Jul 2008
Affected Product & Version - NVBU ALL versions
Affected Module & Version - File System and NVGUI
OS Version - Across platforms (Windows / Unix)
Application Information - N/A
Symptoms:
When a Linux NetVault server tries to browse a Windows NetVault Client that contains filenames with foreign characters, the filenames cannot be displayed in the NVGUI.
Although the file icon is visible, the actual filename is missing, making it impossible for the user to choose the needed files.
However, the normal backup/restore of such files is not a problem and is successful.
This also applies the other way around, ie:
A Windows NetVault Server trying to browse a Linux client having foreign characters in filenames.
A fault has been raised with engineering under the number NVG-4591 and will be resolved in a future NetVault Version. Unfortunately no date can be announced yet.
Solution:
This display problem can be solved by Domain Managing the NetVault server from another NetVault machine that is of the same OS as the client containing the foreign files:
Example:
- Add the Linux NetVault server as a Domain Managed server to a Windows NetVault machine
- From this new Windows machine, open "Backup" and choose the Linux server from the "Server Selection" pull down menu
- You can now see the Windows client's accented files and foreign characters are displayed correctly.
In this case you would essentially browse a Windows client from a Windows server via the Linux NetVault server.
