Exchange mailbox database restore fails - "Failed to Prepare the environment for VSS restore" -
Description
When attempting to restore a mailbox database to its original location the job fails and the following errors are reported in the NVBU logs -
Failed to Prepare the environment for VSS restore of database 'Database_name\Node_name'
VSS environment not initialized for database 'Database_name\Node_name'
Restore stream close for database 'Database_name\Node_name' -
Cause
The mailbox database is not enabled to be overwritten by a restore.

Resolution
There are two options;
1) On the Restore Options tab of the restore job, select "Set 'This database can be overwritten by a restore' flag".
-or-
2) On the database properties screen in the Exchange Management Console, under the maintenance tab place a tick in the box for 'This database can be overwritten by a restore'. -
