When using a HP D2D device as a repository you may recieve the above error when attempting to backup multiple vms.
The number of files which can be concurrently open is limited based on the model being used.The Best Practices Guide from HP,

lists the Maximum open files and suggested limits for the concurrent number of operations. This is important especially when doing Incremental or Differential backups as vRanger must open the previously created backup files in order to perform these backup operations.
