Symptoms:

Restoring the System State is essential during recovery from disaster. Ensure that System State backups are performed regularly on all Exchange Servers. For further information regarding System State backup refer to "NetVault Backup Administrator's Guide".

Here is an overview of recovering Exchange Server 2003 from disaster:
1. Reinstall or recover the Windows Server 2003 operating system (if you cannot start the server) and other software applications. The operating system and service pack must be identical to the operating system and service pack that was installed when the Backup Saveset was created.
2. Restore the System State data.
3. Reinstall Exchange Setup in disaster recovery mode.The Exchange version, edition, and service pack must be identical to the version, edition, and service pack of Exchange that was installed when the Backup Saveset was created.
4. Restore the Exchange databases.

For more information refer to "NetVault Backup APM for Exchange Server Users Guide".

Note that the User's Guide does not include instructions to perform the System State restore. Be aware, however, that this step is required immediately after the operating system and applications are reinstalled or recovered.
