Description: How to resolve global notification failures.
Symptoms: when trying to send a global notification email, the following error message is seen in the binary log:
Error 2007/05/04 14:33:39 0 nv_test C:/Program Files/BakBone_Software/NetVault\util\nvsendmail failed in script sysmail
Error 2007/05/04 14:33:39 0 System nv_test Notification script "C:/Program Files/BakBone Software/NetVault/scripts/global\sysmail.bat" failed: 'Script "C:/Program Files/BakBone_Software/NetVault/scripts/global\sysmail.bat" failed - exit code 1'
Email notifications fail to arrive the destination, but sysop messages are sent correctly.
There are several items that can be checked:
1. Validate the Netvault Configurator Notification tab is configured correctly (mail server name and port)
2. Check that you can connect to the email server on the port specified in the The Netvault Configurator Notification tab (default 25):
In windows use a command prompt, on Unix/Linux use a shell:
telnet mail.server.name 25
You will receive a response similar to one of the following:
* A successful connection will be similar to:
220 mail.server.name Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.1830 ready at
Thu, 10 May 2007 07:32:57 -0700
* A failed connection will look like:
connecting to mail.server.name.... Could not open connection to the host, on port 25: Connect failed
These error messages will vary depending on the mail client and server, but a failed connection means that the server is not contactable on this port. There can be several reasons for this:
1) firewall blocking port
2) virus checker blocking port
3) Mail server configured not to allow smtp from the Netvault Server.
Once the port connection has been resolved, email notifications should work correctly.
