Description: This FAQ describes performance issues relating to Windows Removable Storage Manager.

Symptoms: When using a physical tape library connected to a Windows Netvault server drastic performance issues can be observed. Transfer speeds can be as low as 64kb/sec.

The Windows service known as "Removable Storage Manager" is not required in order for Netvault to operate and should be disabled. Netvault needs to have exclusive access to the devices under its control. If the "Removable Storage Manager" (RSM) is enabled it attempts to control the hardware in addition to Netvault. This constant battle for control can cause drastic problems with performance. Disabling RSM on your Windows Netvault server may solve the performance problems.
