Windows 2008 R2 Active directory restore fails with “Internal error adding additional items to the tree of items to restore”

As part of installing the Active Directory role, Windows installs FRS and creates SYSVOL. This allows us to restore over a vanilla Active directory installation with our backup.  Follow this procedure:

1. prerequisites for targeted restore system:
   - exact same version of windows 2008 R2
   - Install Active directory role but do NOT use dcpromo to configure
2. boot targeted restore system into “directory services restore mode” using the F8 option on boot
3. restore system state backup from original domain controller to targeted restore system.
   - Select system state from restore selection tab
   - Select “non-authoritive SYSVOL restore" from restore options tab
   - Select targeted restore system from target client tab
   - Run restore
4. On restore completion reboot the targeted restore system.
   Note the original domain controller should be down before rebooting or the system you restore to should be on a different network.
5. On reboot the system should be ready to use as active directory domain controller.
   Note if you wish to back up this new system with netvault using the backup job for the original domain controller you will need to uninstall netvault and reinstall it using the same netvault name as the old Domain controller.
