When running a backup that tries to write to a tape, NetVault reports and error "Drive xxx contains media that must be scanned", scans the tape and completes the backup.
When NetVault identifies such a tape, it will automatically initiate a scan. During this process, the tape is continuously read from the beginning until it reports an end of data. NetVault then knows that it is at the end of the unterminated data, and then terminates it for future use.
This usually doesn't require manual intervention. However, a scan that is initiated manually (by right-clicking and selecting "Scan" on a tape in media manager) delivers the same result.
