Error message in the log: "Drive contains media that must be scanned" -
Description
When running a backup that tries to write to a tape, NetVault reports and error "Drive xxx contains media that must be scanned", scans the tape and completes the backup.

Cause
The error message indicates that the tape in question does not a have a valid end-marker / termination at the end of its data. This is most commonly caused by backups that have been aborted, but it can also be caused by a tape that is newer than the media database and contains additional (newer) segments. -
Resolution
When NetVault identifies such a tape, it will automatically initiate a scan. During this process, the tape is continuously read from the beginning until it reports an end of data. NetVault then knows that it is at the end of the unterminated data, and then terminates it for future use.
This usually doesn't require manual intervention. However, a scan that is initiated manually (by right-clicking and selecting "Scan" on a tape in media manager) delivers the same result. -
