When performing hot-add backups, an Windows error message is logged in Event Viewer
Event ID 58: The disk signature of disk x is equal to the disk signature of disk y
(where x and y are numbers)
As for the Event ID 58, this will occur if the VMs (vRanger and the others) are built from the same template and running Windows 2008 R2. The template was created based on a VM and a Disk ID was created but that Disk ID is not changed when a new VM is deployed from that template. There is not a method within VMWare to change the Disk IDs (only the Windows SID). When the VMs disks get hot-added to the vRanger VM, the error message will popup because the Windows OS detects the same Disk ID.
The error in the Windows Event Viewer does not mean there is a fault in the vRanger backups.
To eliminate the error, you can use a Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit utility to modify the Disk IDs on your VMs.
1. Obtain dumpcfgx64.exe from Microsoft
2. On the VMs, find out the Disk ID
3. Open a CMD prompt
4. run the command: 'dumpcfgx64.exe -<Disk ID> 0' (where <Disk ID> is the Disk ID found by the detail disk command)
