Description:
This document discusses errors that may appear in logs during a backup but on subsequent backups there are no such errors.
Symptoms:
Sometimes a backup will fail with general errors similar to the following:
Severe Error 2007/02/12 15:32:49 602 Data Plugin POSA113 Fatal error writing an index entry - cannot continue
Severe Error 2007/02/12 15:32:49 602 Data Plugin POSA113 Fatal error processing children of 'html'
Severe Error 2007/02/12 15:32:49 602 Data Plugin POSA113 Fatal error processing children of 'survey'
Severe Error 2007/02/12 15:32:49 602 Data Plugin POSA113 Fatal error processing children of 'Compaq'
Severe Error 2007/02/12 15:32:49 602 Data Plugin POSA113 Fatal error processing children of 'C:\'
The problem is that there are several errors that don't have unique, clear-cut reasons. Depending on where the problem occurs, the end result is the same - the index can't be written. This could be running out of diskspace (index can't be completed), a problem on the Windows side of things (unable to traverse the relevant directories) or a network connectivity problem (index can't be transmitted from client to server). All of these can be transient, and depending on what state the jobs are in when it happens, the error message will be ambigiuous.
In most cases there isn't anything NetVault could do to prevent this.
