It is possible to create a VTL on a share or a network device, but there are some caveats:
A VTL mimics a physical tape drive and any network interrupt to the streaming of data to the virtual tape will result in job failure, so the network device must be on a dedicated high speed network.
The account used for NetVault services requires full access to the network share. The default user account for NetVault services is Local System. Generally this is not sufficient, and the user should be modified. The Administrator user ID or a Domain Administrator id is usually appropriate.
In the Window's Services tool, Right-click NetVault Process Manager and select Properties. On the Log On tab, select This Account and enter the user name and password of a user with full access to the network share. Stop and start NetVault services.
To add a VTL on a share, when adding creating the device ensure that you populate the "location" field with:
\\ \path to shared dir\
On windows do Not use a locally mapped drive letter.
The rest of the creation is the same as for a normal local VTL.
