Can NetVault Backup Write Directly to a Hard Drive?
NetVault backup jobs can only be targeted to actual tape drive devices located on the NVBU Server's "Device Management", so you cannot specify that flat files of a backup go directly to normal space on a hard drive, internal or external.
If you have the licensing, you can however set up a Virtual Tape Library (VTL) on hard drive space, then specify your backup target to the virtual tapes on that hard drive.
To determine if your NetVault licensing has available, unused capacity to create such a VTL, you can follow the steps listed below, looking for the "Total capacity for virtual devices (gb)" section.
------------------------------------------
How to Navigate to the NetVault License Usage Tab:
-- On the NetVault Server, open the NetVault GUI
-- Click on the Administration link at the top of the GUI, then choose Domain Management
-- Under the left-side list of Controlled Servers, right-click on your NetVault Server and choose "Properties"
-- On the Server Properties window, click on the "Usage" tab
-- Displayed on the Usage tab, you will see the various licenses currently registered on your NetVault Server
-- Also shown is the "Licensed" capacity for each component and the quantity currently "Used"
