When attempting LAN Free (iSCSI/Fiber) backups from VMFS 5 volumes you receive read errors such as
Error Message: 2654 - can't read vix:......

Cause
This is a known issue (ID 12848) and is caused by the fact the VDDK 1.2.1 is not compatible with VMFS 5.

Resolution
Please upgrade to vRanger version 5.3.x from Quest Downloads Page which has the fix for this issue. vRanger 5.3 contains vMware's VDDK version 5 which is required for ESX 5 and VMFS 5 compatability.
