Description:
With Exchange 2007, the NetVault Exchange Mailbox APM is no longer available.
This article explains why and offers a workaround.
Symptoms:
In order to backup individual mailboxes, our Exchange Mailbox APM was relying on the Microsoft Exchange
Legacy Development Technique called MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface).
With the release of Exchange 2007, Microsoft decided to remove MAPI from the standard distribution, the reason being that this interface was problematic and unstable.
Since Microsoft advises to discontinue using MAPI, Quest has decided not to use it.
Alternatively, we offer a solution along with the guidance of Microsoft.
It requires the use of NetVault Exchange Server APM in conjunction with the Microsoft Exchange recovery functionalities: "Deleted Item Retention" and "Recovery Storage Groups" -
Resolution
1) Deleted Item Retention:
As a best practice, Microsoft recommends to make use of and increase the "Deleted Item Retention" period.
When an item is deleted, a copy of this item is kept in the user's mailbox database for the specified time.
This allows for the recovery of this item within the specified time and circumvents the need to restore.
2) Recovery Storage Groups:
The Recovery Storage Group (RSG) is a resource that was made available since Exchange 2003.
This utility allows for the creation of this special Storage Group that can be mounted outside of an actual Exchange Server’s configuration to serve as a target for the restore of backed up data.
With an RSG in place, previously backed up data can be restored to this RSG without disrupting the existing structure of the live Exchange Server.
From that RSG you can then use the available function to recover and merge the needed individual item.
