Install the plugin on Netvault server or Client, best practice would be to install the VMware plugin on the Netvault server or client that has the tape library, VTL or SmartDisk you intend to backup the data to.
Note: When you install the VMware plugin on the either Netvault server or Client the licence will have to be transferred to the client or netvault server. The license will only support backing up 1 ESX server if multiple ESX servers were being backed up with the plugin installed locally and you want to backup all the ESX server through the netvault server or one specific client a licence upgrade to VMware enterprise will be required.
The only way around this is to install the plugin 3 times on clients/NVserver and backup a 1 ESX server on each client/NetVault server. This way we can transfer the existing licenses to the client/NetVault server. This will cost nothing and the license department would only require machine ID of the clients/NetVault server to transfer the licenses.
Explanation:
Bakbone was forced into this change because VMware plugin 2.0 uses a new protocol to backup the Virtual system, called VADP and it is not supported by VMware with the plugin local installed on ESX server. VADP is VMware’s latest data protection protocol and has to be used when backing up VMware images.
