Error: Cannot backup vm '<VM>' - snapshot hardware configuration mismatch. Please commit al (4044076)

Recieving the following error during a backup

"Error: Cannot backup vm '<VM>' - snapshot hardware configuration mismatch. Please commit all open snapshots before continuing backup."

A possible cause of this is open snapshots on VM.

Commit open snapshots with following process:

• Go into snapshot manager for the failing VM by right-clicking the VM and selecting Snapshot\Snapshot Manager.
• If you see open snapshots in the snapshot manager:

1. Press the “Delete All” button.
2. Run test on demand backup on this VM.
3. After backup is complete check to see that there are not open snapshots in snapshot manager again.
4. Wait for scheduled backup to see if problem persists.

• If you do not see any snapshots in the snapshot manager:

1. “Browse” the datastore that this VM is located on and look in that VM folder.
2. Look for files that end in -00000x.vmdk. Leave the datastore browser open.
3. If they exist, go back to snapshot manager and create a snapshot, the name is not relevan.
4. After the snapshot is created, press the “Delete All” button.
5. Check the Datastore browser again to see if all -00000x.vmdk file have been deleted.
6. Then run a test backup and check if all snapshots have been deleted after the backup completes.
7. Wait for scheduled backup to see if problem persists.
