A VA-based HotAdd or Machine-based HotAdd backup, restore or replication job fails with error: "Error Message: 3201 - can't open [datastore name] vm_name/vm_name.vmdk" and vSphere Client shows error message: "No compatible host has sufficient resources to satisfy the reservation".
When adding a hardware to a powered-on virtual machine, an ESX 4.1 or earlier host performs a Fast/Suspend/Resume (FSR) operation. An FSR is essentially a vMotion to the same host. If HA/DRS requirements are not met then the task will fail and a VA or vRanger's VM won't be able to use HotAdd feature.
Open vSphere Client, select cluster where a VA or a vRanger's VM is located, go to HA/DRS tab and apply HA/DRS recommendations. If that did not resolve the issue, please contact VMware Support for further troubleshooting.
Workaround: Switch job to a VA-based LAN or Machine-based LAN transport.
