The underlying connection was closed: A connection that was expected to be kept alive was closed by the server.
Description
- The following message is logged while running a backup or replication:
The underlying connection was closed: A connection that was expected to be kept alive was closed by the server.
- It usually occurs while trying to backup or replicate the vCenter virtual machine.
- It fails while creating the snapshot on the VM.
Cause

The virtual machine must be stunned when a snapshot is created and when the snapshot is removed. These stun times cannot be precalculated as it depends on the disks IOPS. While the machine is stunned, we may lose communication to it. This is the default VMware behavior.

If we snapshot the vCenter VM, we may lose communication to it as the sessions get closed due to no response from vCenter.
Resolution
The VMware connection timeouts can be increased to workaround the issue.

In order to accomplish this, adjust the following lines in the Vizioncore.vRanger.Service.exe.config file (The default location of this file is C:\Program Files\Quest\vRanger):
- Change InventoryLoadTimeout to 4200
- Change VirtApiQueryRequestTimeout to 1200000
- Change VirtSessionEstablishmentRetries to 1
- Change VirtSessionEstablishmentWaitTime to 5000
- Change VirtLoginRetries to 15
- Change VirtLoginWaitTime to 5000
