How to reduce the amount of protected data by expiring savesets?
You need to reduce the amount of data protected.
You need to reduce the amount of data protected.
There are several ways to expire savesets.
1) If savesets are on tape and you want to expire all the savesets simply do a Blank operation on the tape.
2) If you only want to expire a few savesets on tape you can use explore storage and view/expire each saveset. Note that tape will not be reused until all savesets have been expired.
3) If savesets are on a disk storage such as SmartDisk you can expire individual savesets from the Explore Storage>Disk Storage. Space will not be reclaimed until the devices cleanup process runs.
4) If there are several savesets to expire you can use the Command Line utility nvexpiresaveset
First you might need to find out which SaveSets you are going to remove .
You can use the nvmediadetails or nvrestore -list to get a list of savesets to be removed.
The details of the commands can be found in the documentation:
https://support.quest.com/technical-documents/netvault-backup/11.4.5/reference-guide/14#TOPIC-838436
You should be aware that If you use the command of “nvexpiresaveset”, you will expire the backup saveset and remove its entries from the NVDB.
However, you will delete the entries for the Storage Device and the tape.
At this time there is not a command to specify the device or group label; therefore you will need to delete the entries via the NVGUI.
If Save-sets belonging to media from a physical tape library gets expired, you can always re-scan them to get them back to the netvault database.
Stopping and starting the foundation smartdisk services after expiring the saveset ensure that the smartdisk starts walking manifests as soon as you re-start it.
