NetVault: Backup SQL Server APM Release 5.0 Technical Bulletin
August 2007
For all Bakbone Software customers who have purchased a license for NetVault Backup APM for SQL Server, we would like to take this opportunity to inform you of an important note regarding the use of this APM with VSS. There may be scenarios in which the database backup up using this version may not be Restorable.
Problem description of the issue:
Using NVBU APM version SQL Server 2000 & 2005, Release 5.0 Update 5 (5.0.22), on a SQL Server 2005 msdb database backup utilizing the VSS backup option will result in the database backup being unrestorable.
This problem only affects the msdb database when the backup is performed with the backup options method VSS.
Resolution: We do not recommend using a mixture of VSS and VDI backup methods; therefore, you should modify any existing SQL Server backups to use VDI.
Select use Virtual Device Instance (VDI) in the backup options screen for any new SQL Server 2005 database backups.
A new SQL Server APM Release to address this issue will be available mid September 2007.
BakBone strongly recommends that users pay full attention to the system and NetVault device logs that are generated and check the integrity of the data with regular restores.
