Product & Version: NetVault 8u1 and lower
OS Version: Windows
Module & Version: File System Plugin 7.1.2 and lower
Application version: N/A
Symptoms:
When trying to perform a System State restore of a Domain Server or Member machine, the restore completes with warnings, and messages are logged about failing to restore certain registry hives:
Severe Error 2008/05/15 14:12:02 62 Data Plugin NTCHRIS21 Failed to restore the SYSTEM registry hive : Failed to replace the SYSTEM registry hive : The system cannot find the path specified.
Severe Error 2008/05/15 14:12:03 62 Data Plugin NTCHRIS21 Failed to restore the user registry hive '.DEFAULT'
...
Upon reboot, Windows will fail to completely come up and might log the following error message:
"When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct."
Reason:
This only happens on systems that use Windows Dynamic Disks (not Basic Disks). The issue is that the file system plugin can't handle the different way of adressing a dynamic disk, and consequently isn't able to write the required registry files.
The problem has been resolved in File System Plugin 7.1.3, later versions are included starting with NetVault 8u2. Backups performed with these newer versions of the plugin can be restored to Dynamic Disks.
Existing backups can still not be restored with the new plugin. A fault (FSG-505) is open on this subject. However, there is a workaround - the problem lies with NetVault's inability to write the registry files to the correct location. With the latest plugins, you can restore the Registry Files to an alternate location (e.g. "C:\temp").
If you restore the files after restoring the rest of the system state, you can then boot with a rescue cd (e.g. BartPE) that has write access to the dynamic disk and move the relevant registry files from C:\temp to their correct location yourself (C:\windows\system32\config\).
