Product & Version: NetVault 7.4 - NetVault 8.1
Module & Version: All
OS Version: Linux, possibly other Unix
Application version: N/A
Symptoms:
A file system backup of a Linux machine fails, reporting "Fatal error writing backed up data" and then "Fatal error processing children of proc"
Later NetVault versions and their file system plugins automatically exclude the Linux system folder /proc, as it is a special folder that does not need to be backed up. It is also not available for selection while browsing.
Certain Linux distributions (for example Red Hat 4 when installing named) create a chroot structure to run a daemon in, and map the system's /proc folder into that directory using a bind mount point - so /proc is mirrored in /var/named/chroot/proc.
When it comes to NetVault backing up this folder, it does not recognize the special nature of the bind mount and therefore can't treat it the way it treats /proc directly, which has a different file system type. It tries to back it up and then fails on the special files contained in it.
This has been logged with engineering as fault FSG-444 and was fixed in NetVault 8.2. Alternatively, if you have such a folder structure, create an exclusion list on that system by means of a "File containing a list of path based patterns to exclude from backups" and use it to exclude /var/named/chroot/proc in all backups.
