Failed upgrade from 7.5.1 to 7.6.4, specified cast is not valid when starting service (4041821)

After performing an upgrade of the vRanger application, you may experience the following errors:

• The upgrade itself claimed to be successful & the services started.
• Cannot open the UI. It fails with the error "Cannot connect to service"
• Opening the vRanger service using the debug mode fails with the error "the specified cast is not valid"

This occurs due to a failed database upgrade. This may occur due to the following reasons:

• The vRanger application was installed using Windows Authentication to a remote database. The user does not have full rights to modify the database, but the user has access to the instance and the vRangerPro database.
• The database was manually upgraded using the DB upgrade scripts found in the vRanger installation directory.

It is not recommended to upgrade the database manually. If the Windows user that was used in the installation directory doesn't have the permissions to access and upgrade the database, assign the correct permissions to the SQL instance/database. If this is not possible, use a local SQL account in the vRanger installation process to upgrade the database.

If the database scripts were used to upgrade the database, make sure you also use the following scripts:

• CreateCustomStoredProcedures.sql
• CreateGeneratedStoredProcedures.sql
