How to Search for a File and Restore it from a Recovery Point (4041160)

Rapid Recovery 6.1 offers the feature to search for individual files in recovery points and restore them to a local folder on the Core machine while preserving the directory structure.

This feature can be handy in cases of:

1. Restoring specific corrupted folders and directories 
2. Volume rollback is not a suitable solution due to amount of files needing to be restored
3. Mounting a volume image from a recovery point is not a recommended approach because the date-timestamp of the file is unknown
4. The exact file name or location of the deleted files is not known, but some parts are

To access this feature, open the Core UI.

1. Click the "More" button in the upper left hand side
2. Click "File Search"
3. Specify the search criteria
   • Machine
   • Recovery Point Date Range
   • Filename (can use * and ? wildcards):
   • Directories to search:
     • Note:  Specifying the directory currently works different with agentless protected machines.  To search for a file in an agentless protected machine's recovery points, specify the volume and directory how the Core UI sees it for the protected machine.  For example, "\\Hard disk 1\Volume1\Users" will search the C:\users directory as expected.
   • More Options presents:
     • Whether or not to include subdirectories
     • Whether or not to use the fast search algorithm for NTFS volumes 
       NOTE: If you encounter an issue during a search of an NTFS volume, attempt the search again without this option selected.
     • Limit the search results

The feature searches in the specified volume images (from latest to oldest) in the specified directory (the default is the root of the volume). Because the feature continues to search through recovery points and locations even after the requested file is found, you can pause or stop a search before it completes. You can run multiple searches simultaneously, but you cannot begin them at the same time. For example, to find another file, you can begin a second search while the first search is still in progress. However, you can only search one protected machine at a time.

After you find the file, you can restore it directly from the File Search page. The file search and restore feature limits restoring capabilities to only locations on the Core. You cannot restore a file to a protected machine.
