VMware Snapshot freezes or suspends the virtual machine -
Description
Running a backup or replication job causes the virtual machine to lose communication, freeze or suspend for long periods of time. -
Cause
A VMware virtual machine needs to be suspended in the following scenarios:
- Snapshot creation: The disks need to be closed in order to create the snapshot. Quiescing may increase the time it will take to create the snapshot.
- Snapshot removal: Deleting snapshots in the chain never requires suspending the virtual machine, but consolidating all disks will suspend the virtual machine to put the disks into a state that is appropriate for consolidation.
Please note that the stun time cannot be pre-calculated and this has been improved in every new version of VMware.

Resolution
This process is highly dependent on the disk performance (IOPS), but we recommend the following:
- Do not run an excessive amount of tasks/snapshot on slow datastores.
- Delete any user-created snapshot prior to the backup.
- If a cluster node is affected due to the snapshot creation/removal, consider using the vRanger Physical Client.
