If using a VMware Virtual Center (Windows-based), the copy of Windows being used may have just expired its trial period, or the license being used may be invalid. This prevents any API calls or inventory polling to be completed via the Virtual Center (i.e. Microsoft shuts-down the functionality intentionally.)
There are two workarounds:
1) If it's a small environment that does not need a Virtual Center, removing the Virtual Center should fix the issue (i.e. just replicate or back-up directly from the host(s), with no Virtual Center defined).
OR
2) With the foreknowledge this is a TEMPORARY MEASURE SANCTIONED BY MICROSOFT, follow the procedure below to extend the trial period of the Virtual Center's Windows install. This extends the trial period by 30 days (this is a Microsoft KB article, so they have approved this procedure, and there is no need to worry about the legality of it. However, please emphasize to the customer that the license is not valid and a valid one must be purchased/entered at the earliest possible date, with 30 days being the maximum.)
