This article describes the feasibility of backing up Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices as protected Agent volumes.
Customers using a NAS device may want to back it up in the Rapid Recovery 6 Core. This article addresses why network-attached storage devices cannot be added as protected machines in the Core.
The backups that are saved to the Core use Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) technology.VSS is a Microsoft technology that allows volume backups to be performed while applications on a system continue to write to the volumes. Backing a volume up to the core requires the volume to be recognized as a local volume.
Because a NAS identifies the device as network storage, not a local volume, a NAS device cannot be backed up as a protected volume in the Core.
