Backup speed decreases as it runs
Description

The backup starts with the high throughput, but as it runs the throughput drops down to 1-2 MB/s and stays that way until the job is completed. This behavior is especially noticeable on large Virtual Machines.
Cause

One of the reasons this may happen is when CIFS repository is located on Windows Server 2003/2008. It is caused by system caching problem, which is only apparent under heavy block level network transfers.
Resolution

Upgrading the repository server to Windows Server 2008R2 or newer should correct the problem if system caching is the cause.
