Replication fails with "is in an invalid power state for the current operation"
Description

Replication fails with the message that the virtual machine is in an invalid power state for the operation.
Cause

This issue has been seen with VMs running very old virtual hardware, ex. version 4 hardware on vSphere 5.1, which should be at virtual hardware version 8 or 9.
Resolution

1. Upgrade VMware Tools on the offending VM. This will probably involve a reboot.

2. Shut down the VM

3. In the vSphere client, right-click the VM and select Upgrade Virtual Hardware. Boot the VM.

4. You may have to reboot the VM after the OS installs the drivers for the new virtual hardware.
