Restoring a configuration backup from one appliance to another leaves some settings blank
I have restored a configuration backup from one of my FxM appliances to a new one. However, I notice that my Backup configuration settings are now blank, though they existed on the appliance that the backup was taken from. What is the reason for this behaviour, and are there other settings affected the same way?
If you are backing up to a different FxM appliance, with a differing IP address, then you will lose the backup configuration, as well as the SSH access settings and the web server settings (whether the web server uses HTTP or HTTPS).
These settings will not "translate" when restored to a machine with a different IP because in one way or the other they are dependent on the IP address of the machine itself. For example, with the backup configuration using SSL you have to upload the appliance's SSL key to the backup server. Those keys are tied to the IP address so if you backup them and restore them to an appliance with a different IP it won't work because the SSL key does not match the new IP address.
A similar thing happens if you backup a distributed monitor and restore to a new appliance with a different IP. The SSL keys for the configured servers are encrypted with an algorithm that depends on the MAC address of the NIC in the appliance.
