If WSUS uses the default SQL Server instance, its name is MSSQLSERVER
The issue can be addressed in two steps:
1. Enable TCP/IP in SQL configuration manager
Open SQL Configuration Manager, select the Protocols for MSSQLServer/in the tree pane, right-click TCP/IP in the results pane and select "enable" from the context menu. Continue by selecting SQL Native Client Configuration in the tree pane, to expand it, and then click Client Protocols. In the results pane right-click TCP/IP in the results pane and select "enable" from the context menu.
The changes will be in effect after restarting the SQL Server service.
2. Add the desired user to the SQL Server instance.
Open an elevated command prompt.
Stop the SQL Server Service. For this example MSSQLSERVER is used.
To stop the SQL service run
C:\> net stop MSSQLSERVER
REstart the SQL Server instance in single user mode, allowing only the sqlcmd utility to log in.
C:\> net start MSSQLSERVER /m"SQLCMD"
Log in the SQL Server instance
C:\> sqlcmd -s .\MSSQLSERVER
Please note that the capitalization counts. Either -S or -s will work. In this case -s (lower case) will work.
The sqlcmd prompt appears (it is n> where n is a number)
Add the desired account with sysadmin privileges.
1> EXEC sp_addsrvrolemember 'DOMAIN\Username', 'sysadmin';
2> GO
1>
Type exit to exit sqlcmd
Start the SQL server instance:
C:\> net start MSSQLSERVER
Return to the Appassure GUI. If you addedthe default account, the WSUS SQL server should already show a green dot. Otherwise, go to the Actions button on the upper right side of the Summary page, choose SQL->"set instance credentials" and enter the newly added SQL credentials.
