How to Enroll a Device in Apple DEP using Apple Configurator 2.5 or higher
How to use Apple Configurator 2.5 or higher to enroll iOS devices in the Apple Device Enrollment Program.
You need to be using Apple Configurator 2.5 or later, and your iOS devices should be running iOS 11 or later.
The first step is to turn off Find My iPhone from under settings on your device to disable the Activation Lock feature.
Next, you will want to create a Wi-Fi configuration profile within Apple Configurator that will connect to your Wi-Fi. Generally, you specify the Wi-Fi SSID, WPA2 security and Wi-Fi password. This profile is selected in the following steps to complete the move into DEP
Next, connect your iOs device to the Mac computer running Apple Configurator using an Apple approved Lighting cable.
Next, in a fashion similar to supervising a device, you select the device to add to the DEP and click the prepare button or right-click and select the prepare action.
In the prepare wizard, click the “Add to Device Enrollment Program” and “Activate and Complete Enrollment” options
On the MDM Enrollment page, select “New Server…” and click next
On the Define MDM Server page, enter a name for our service, such as KACE and then your enrollment URL which is https://your_tenant_name.enroll.kacecloud.com
When clicking next you’ll get a spinner that should stop spinning fairly quickly. Just click next when it stops spinning
On the Assign to Organization page, even if you’ve previously supervised devices, select “New Organization…” and click next
You will now sign into your DEP account and give your new organization a name
On the next screen, you should select “Generate a new supervision identity”
The next page allows you to select which screens to display when setting up the device
On the Choose Network Profile page, select the Wi-Fi configuration profile you created in step 1
For the Automated Enrollment Credentials, leave both the User Name and Password blank
Now click Prepare
The next step is to wait… as in the normal supervision process, the Apple Configurator will display a dialog with a progress indicator telling you it’s going through 3 steps… It’s actually 6 steps and will keep adding them along the way. After step 2 it will restart the device again. Now simply wait until step 6 completes
After a bit of waiting, in your Apple DEP portal, you should find a new Apple Configurator MDM server that this process automatically created with 1 device associated with it.
Remember to move the new device from the Apple Configurator MDM server in DEP to the correct MDM server for your organization. Also, your device should have our MDM Provisioning Profile under settings. Note: until 30 days pass, the user will be able to remove the profile.
