When the VMware plug-in is installed on a vCenter server, following upgrade of the VMware infrastructure from version 5.5 to 6.0, it is no longer possible to browse or backup using the VMware plug-in.
A browse attempt on the plug-in returns: "Failed to get connection to the plug-in".
Scheduled backups fail immediately with: "Process running on 'CLIENT_NAME' has exited unexpectedly".
This issue is specific to the use of the VMware plug-in on vCenter servers.
Currently we do not support installing VMware plug-in on a vCenter server due to the known dll conflict described in the Virtual Disk Development Kit 6.0 Release Notes found here under: "DLL conflict when VDDK installed on vCenter Server.":
https://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vddk/vddk-600-releasenotes.html
We have logged Bug 30188 to investigate the feasibility supporting our plugin libraries on vCenter server.
Workaround:
The VMware plug-in should not be installed on a vCenter v6.0 and above.
Install the VMware plug-in on any other Windows NVBU client to resolve this issue.
Status:
Bug 30188 is being investigated to evaluate possible support for vCenter servers using Vmware plug-in.
