NI: What are the differences betweeen.NDL files vs notes:// links?

We have a large Citrix environment and are concerned about the use of doc links as they are passed  from Notes to the Outlook clients on the Citrix machines.

Our concern is the notes:// links we pass to Outlook wont be read. Has anyone run across a customer where the notes:// links wont work in a Citrix environment but the .ndl files will? Have you run across a situation where the notes:// links wont work in a Citrix environment but the .ndl files will?

A NDL file is only different from a URI notes:// by containing a HINT field. Apart from this both require local configuration (URI requires REG registration and NDL requires MIME registration), both configuration are made by the Notes client installer running the program file "notesw32.reg"

NDL : HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ndl\Shell\Open\Command = %notesdir%notes.exe %1

URI :

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\notes = URL:Notes Protocol
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\notes\DefaultIcon = %notesdir%notes.exe
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\notes\Shell\Open\Command = %notesdir%notes.exe %1

If one works, the other should work too as both are HKCR hive and both use the same program path "%notesdir%notes.exe %" - it may not be due to Citrix environment but to how Notes was setup on workstations.
