Editing a GPO produces error: "Error 0X80072037. There is a Naming violation" (4323092)

When attempting to check out a GPO for editing the following error is displayed:

Error 0X80072037. There is a naming violation.

This is likely due to a conflict policy within Active Directory or a bad copy in the GPOADmin backup.

Workaround 1:

• Get the GUID from the culprit GPO and then navigate in Active Directory using ADSIEdit.msc to the following lcoation: Default Naming Context | System Policies
  Look for the matching GUID. Under that folder expand CN=Machine and remove the entry that has CN=MicrosoftCNF: in it

Workaround 2:

• If removing the conflict does not resolve issue, there is an issue with the latest backup. In this case you must unregister the GPO and then re-register it (enable the maintain version history option).

Workaround 3:

This issue could be due to a missing gpt.ini file. Check the GUID folder for the GPO within SYSVOL, there should be a file called gpt.ini. To recreate this file, the version of the GPO needs to be found in Active Directory. Open ADSIedit.msc and navigate to the GUID container for the GPO which will be found in "CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=<domain>,DC=com". Go to the properties and check the value for "versionNumber". In the SYSVOL folder create a file named gpt.ini file and then edit it using notepad. Below should be the contents:
