The below error may occur when editing a GPO. Even with the error, the GPO can be modified and deployed successfully.

Cause
An unexpected character in the .pol files. -
Resolution
This is a defect when GPOADmin encounters specific characters in the registry.pol file in a GPO. GPOADmin will read this file on an edit to see if any of the registry settings may persist after edit (known as registry tattooing). This allows GPOADmin to enable the "Registry Cleanup" button in the edit dialogue to remove potentially tattooed settings at the discretion of the user.Please note that this will not have any impact on the editing / deployment etc. of the GPO. It is meant as a convenience item for the user if they wish to remove potentially persisted settings (note as well that these settings would be persisted if the GPO is edited via GPMC). This is not harmful to the user. At this point the parsing failure is a warning message with no impact other than disabling the ability to clean up tattooed registry settings.The defect ID is VSTS020872 and will be reviewed for a future release of the product. -
