After upgading to Vmware APM 2.6.5 from previous version 2.5.15, the backups will no longer backup using the SAN mode, all jobs are run in NBD mode.
The problem here is that the correct registry entries are not found after the upgrade need for the SSL conection and the job fails over to NBD mode.
On closer inspection it was found that double entries existed in the registry:
WRONG PATH:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Wow6432Node\VMware, Inc
CORRECT PATH :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\VMware, Inc
The issue can be resolved by editing the registry as follows:
1) create a new key in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\
and call it VMware, Inc.
2) The next step would be to create key under the Vmware, Inc. key and call it VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit
3) Inside the key "VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit" create a REG_DWORD entry and call it VerifySSLCertificates and leave it with the defaul values that it was created with
4) Next create a key called volatile this is also under the Vmware, Inc. key and then create a new string value called UUIDHost you will now need to check in the incorrect path under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Wow6432Node\VMware, Inc.\volatile
Here you need to check the same key and double click it to get the UUIDHost value and add it to the new string that you created called UUIDHost
Once this has done close the regedit and run a backup, you should now see that the SAN transport option will be used.
