Performance Analysis and PI (Performance Investigator) are two different products with alternative architectures.Oracle PI became available with the 5.7.5.1 Oracle cartridge for Foglight which requires the 5.7.1 or higher FMS.SQL Server PI became available with the 5.7.0.1 SQL Server cartridge for Foglight which requires the 5.7.0 or higher FMS. -
Resolution
Both Performance Analysis and PI share common features in that they offer a comprehensive suite for diagnosing and tuning database instance and application workloads. Through advanced diagnostic features and specially-designed interfaces, They transforms Oracle performance management into a faster, easier and more efficient experience using database real-time monitoring and historical analysis applications.Performance Analysis application uses the StealthCollect(™) resource-light high sampling rate technology, with the capacity to bind between the (anonymous) database activities and the real users, programs and Oracle resource consumers (dimensions) in an intuitive user-friendly interface. Listings, reports, and graphical flows and charts grant you both a system-wide perspective and the ability to drill-down into any existing or user-defined unit.Performance Analysis has three components, a Middleware, a Collector, and a Long-Term data repository. Collector agents are installed on each of the monitored hosts which then connect back to a centralized middleware server. The data from the middleware is presented to the customer using a client executable installed on Windows desktops. Long-term data, 7 days or more, is stored in a repository database.Performance Analysis can be integrated into Foglight by adding the port and connection information to the collector and middleware into the database agent.PI is a new feature that is part of the Foglight database cartridge. Unlike Performance Analysis, it is built directly into the Foglight database cartridge. Using this architecture, collector agents are not installed directly on the hosts, and a middleware is no longer required. Additional dashboard are provided in the database agent to see detailed performance information.There are some additional architecture requirements for SQL Server and Oracle PI including a new repository database and an additional license for the product.
