TCP protocol by server

This category provides metrics reflecting all of the TCP protocol traffic to and from a specific server. In order for this category of metrics to provide data, protocol definitions specifying the ports used for each TCP protocol you would like to monitor must be defined in the web console. Protocols are identified by a list of TCP port numbers. The system will generate metrics, as long as it has been configured, for any TCP-based protocol (for example, FTP, SMTP, LDAP).

Metrics in this category can provide answers to these questions:

TCP protocol by subnet

This category provides metrics reflecting all of the TCP protocol traffic to and from a specific subnet. For information on defining subnets on the appliance, see “Defining subnets” in the Foglight Experience Monitor Installation and Administration Guide.

Types of metrics

Each category provides a list of metrics that contain information about a specific aspect of that category. Most of the available metrics can be broadly grouped into these classifications:

These metrics are updated whenever an event occurs to a resource. Every event may affect several different metrics for a resource as well as metrics for resources in other categories.

A good example if the page download event. Whenever a browser issues a request to a web site to download a page a page download event occurs. The event is tracked and analyzed by the appliance and affected metrics are updated upon completion. Metrics affected by a page download include:

The metrics for a single event are aggregated into the metrics for the associated resource. An event may even cause metrics for several resources across several categories to be updated. Consider an example page: http://company.com/products.html. When this page is downloaded, an event is generated. The end-to-end time and bytes transferred are added to the metrics in the Web Page category for the company.com/products.html page resource. These same values are also added to the resource in the Web Site category for the company.com web site resource.

Many categories contain metrics with the same name. These metrics share the same name because they include values from the same metrics for the same events. Both the Web Site category and the Web Page category have a metric called Web Page End-To-End Time. In both cases, this metric is updated by web page events using the download time associated with the web page event. The difference between these metrics is in which events are included in the calculation. For example, a resource in the Web Site category for company.com will only add web page events that have a matching host name in their URL.

You will encounter several different types of metrics in the web console. The metric type will affect various aspects of the user interface, such as how reports are constructed, and the options that are available when creating alarms for a metric.

For more information about the following topics, see these sections:

Count metric

This metric represents either a count for the total number of times an event occurs or a sum of all lengths for a set of events. This metric is utilized for measurements that are monotonically increasing over time (for example, total number of page downloads). Typical examples of this metric include byte count, page download count, or user count.
