“Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device” error when booting a Hyper-V VM (4040112)

After successfully completing a one-time or continuous virtual export to Hyper-V, the virtual machine will not boot and displays "Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device." in the console window.  Please take note of your Hyper-V export configuration to see if you set up the export as Generation 2 using the disk format VHDX.

Solution

Re-run the export wizard and select generation 1 using disk format VHD.  Your VM should successfully boot now as generation 1 VMs use PCAT BIOS firmware.

Workaround

NOTE: This has been tested for supported EFI bootable (Gen 2) machines, exported to Hyper-V 2012 R2 & 2016 and ESXi 5.5 & 6.0 hosts. Supported exports to hosts are dependent on what version of Core is installed. Check product Release Notes to verify what is supported with your build. This work around will not work with a SRP bootable (Gen 1) machine.

1. Run export of machine to Hyper-V or ESXi host.
2. If exporting to Hyper-V select Generation 2 and VHDX
3. When you get to Volumes only export C:. Do not select the EFI or Recovery volumes.
4. After the export completes, start the VM. The boot will fail at first, but then the OS will repair the recovery partitions by creating new EFI and Recovery volumes. Login and configure your machine.
5. NOTE: Before you resume backups you must format the Recovery volume or all backups will fail with a "IOCTL FsctlAllowExtendedDasdIo failed The parameter is incorrect" error. Please see the solution in Transfer Fails with IOCTL FsctlAllowExtendedDasdIo failed The parameter is incorrect (131440).
6. Resume backups.
