Vmware backup fails in SAN transport mode

Netvault Vmware plugin backup fails when the SAN transport is in use. If the plugin is set to failover to NBD (network) the job will complete but in LAN mode. When the network is used the following can be seen in the binary or trace log: Disk '[Datastore_Dothill_1_LR] FTP/FTP-000002.vmdk' opened using mode 'nbd' If the plugin is set to use only SAN then it will fail. The following is reported in the VDDK logs Cannot access LUN LVID:4f02d690-2569bee8-eb6a-f04da20a9df5/4f02d68f-037b803a-05f8-f04da20a9df5/1, cannot open disk snapshot-255[Datastore_Dothill_1_LR] FTP/FTP-000002.vmdk. Giving up. The above error can occur for some other so please do check the pre-requisites for using the plugin in SAN transport mode.

The current version of the plugin (2.155, 2.1.58) uses the VDDK version 12.1. This version of the VDDK does not support the Vmware File System (VMFS) 5.x

 

Future release of the plugin will integrate the VDDK 5 which supports the VMFS 5.

In the meantime, non advanced transport mode will have to be used.
