When one tries to do a quiesced snapshot using vSphere Client, it also fails with the following error:
The guest OS has reported an error during quiescing. The error code was: 5 The error message was: 'VmBackupSyncDriverStart' operation failed.
As of ESX 3.5 Update 2, quiescing is also done by Microsoft's Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). VSS is provided by Microsoft in their operating systems as of Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP.
If SYNC driver causes snapshot issues on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and higher, it can be safely disabled. To disable the SYNC driver:
