How to configure Oracle Service_Name for the Foglight database repository (259922)

The Oracle database server where the Foglight database repository will be installed only has Service_Name available for the connection. There is no Oracle SID available to be used.

During the Foglight installation, when providing the Service_Name of the Oracle database, the connection fails with the following error:

"ORA-12518 TNS: listener could not hand off client connection".

How can be configured an Oracle server for the Foglight database repository, when using Oracle Service_Name instead of Oracle SID?

By design, the Foglight UI installer will expect the Oracle SID.

Starting from version 5.9.2, there is no way to bypass the installation of the Foglight repository using the Foglight UI installers. Previous versions of Foglight has this option available.

WORKAROUND:

1. Install the Foglight using the silent installation (console/CMD) based on the instructions in the installation guide "Installing Foglight on Windows/an UNIX System with an External Oracle database"
2. When the installer asks for the Foglight database repository installation, select the option to create the database manually.
3. Complete the rest of the steps of the installation, as detailed in the installation guide of "Installing Foglight on Windows/an UNIX System with an External Oracle database" including the creation of the Oracle database. The guide can be found here.
4. Before starting the Foglight service, modify the server.config file as follow, in order to connect to the Oracle database with the Service_Name:
   server.jdbc.url="jdbc:oracle:thin:@//<ORACLE_HOST>:<ORACLE_PORT>/<SERVICE_NAME>";
5. Uncomment and define the following variables in the server.config file, then save the file
   server.database.host = "DB Hostname";
   server.database.port = "DB Port";
   server.database,name = "DB Name";
6. Start Foglight
