QCS has been used and now time has arrived to decommission the tool and to remove all objects.
What is the best way to accomplish this?
Note: It is important not to unsubscribe from publications and not to uninstall the tool if the QCS Stub objects have not been removed yet.
One of possible approaches could be:
Under QCS properties change the retention period to 1 day (default is 30 day).
Then edit the publication and remove all objects. If publication was populated via containers or by adding the entire AD then remove the AD or containers and close with OK.
Important: when additional filters have been used don't delete the filters, by doing so QCS will process and synchronize absolutely all objects (since there will be no filters anymore).
After 24 hours verify that the published stub objects have been removed from AD and then you can safely uninstall the tool by using Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs. Stopping the services is a good idea but no additional steps are needed.
After QCS was removed the MAPI CDO or Outlook can be uninstalled as well.
Use File Explorer and examine the directory, if there are any leftovers still present under Program files\Quest Software\Collaboration Services then they can be removed (deleted) manually.
Decommissioning the tool but leaving the published stub objects in place is not advisable, since there is no synchronization anymore those objects will sooner or later become unusable and redirection will stop working, group membership will not get populated and similar issues will arise.
Deleting the published objects manually or via other means is allowed, the OU created by QCS can also be deleted, but those steps should be performed after QCS was uninstalled or at least stopped completely.
