After upgrading to Exchange Server 2013, the Data Load Service and Exchange Store Manager Service started to fail.
The following errors were logged in the respective log files:
DL.log

System.Exception: Unable to determine Exchange connection settings
ESM.log
ERROR FolderCrawler.Worker [3728856529-921715343-6-0x0] Error processing mailbox.
