Solution SOL44219

Title

The media family on device is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family.

Problem Description

You are using LiteSpeed for SQL Server 4.8 or higher. When you try to add a LiteSpeed backup in RM Console (through Add backup process), you get an error: "the media family on device % is incorrectly formed."

This is an example of the error from the Console_S.log file:

[Error] Error occured: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: The media family on device '\\FFRBOISDB07\Backup_LS\WSS_Content_1111_SSP_AdminSite--05-06_16H56.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family.
RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally.

This issue appears since the 2.1 version because Recovery Manager Backup Reader (powered by LiteSpeed) used for direct backup operation has been removed from this version of the product. Instead Recovery Manager uses a location on the content SQL server to stage temporary copies of databases for analysis and restoration.

Cause

The “SQL Server cannot process this media family” error can appear when the full LiteSpeed is not installed on the Site Admin Repository  SQL Server when the LiteSpeed backup is added.

Resolution

1. Install full LiteSpeed 4.8 or higher on the Site Admin Repository SQL server.

2. Give full permissions on the backup file location.

Environment
